Ciao dall'Italia
Up early as I have found out that the WiFI is strong in the early morning. We only bought one bottle of Brunello yesterday – a mistake for sure. We could have shipped a case back to the U.S.
La colazione è arrivata in quel fantastico cestino. (Breakfast came in that great basket.) We need this service at home.
Our journey today started at 9:00 with a trip to Arezzo. It is one of Italy's wealthiest cities, its' prosperity is based on a thriving jewelry industry. Although most of the medieval center was destroyed in WW II resulting in extensive rebuilding and many medieval alleys being replayed by broad avenues, many outstanding sites were preserved.
When we arrived we were met by our guide, who was very nice and full of information - she gave us a 3 hour tour if this amazing city. Walked and climbed many steps and visited many churches. There are many churches in Italy !!!!
Details of what we saw in pictures below.
On the way home our driver, Giovanni, asked if we wanted to stop at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial where the remains of those Americans killed in the long and bloody Allied campaign to liberate Italy are buried. There are 4,398 headstones of Americans. That includes 4,322 Latin crosses, 76 Stars of David and 1,499 tablets of the missing.
(2 headstones have 2 remains and one has 3; there are 6 sets of brothers). It is beautifully laid out as you will see in the photos.
Siamo andati nella cittadina per la nostra cena. È stato un cinque minuti a piedi. (We went to town for our dinner. It was a five minute walk.)
