Italy 2022

Abbiamo avuto la nostra tradizionale Bloody Mary all'aeroporto. (We had our traditional Bloody Mary at the airport). Bar Symon – also split an excellent pastrami sandwich! A nice start to a very long 2 days. Our flight Detroit was on time and smooth. We were delayed 90 minutes in Detroit because a backup battery malfunctioned (it lights up the aisle so it became a safety issue) and had to be replaced. No problem for us as we had a long layover at Amsterdam due to an earlier cancellation to Florence.

We have heard different comments about the Amsterdam airport. The airport was not our favorite. Long walks between gates, not many moving sidewalks, very difficult to find a charging station (for phones iPads, and computers) and it does not have much character but, the airport workers were most efficient and very kind. Everything in English. Did lots of people watching, but could not get much out of conversations around us as we know no Dutch!!!

Called Gisella, the owner of the apartment, to tell her we had arrived on time as expected. Each of us are using Whatsapp, which is a free app for iPhone, using text & phone all over the world for zero cost. She picked us up at the Florence airport. An hour drive to Lucca which gave us a chance to use our Italian while she practiced her English. We were tired as we have been up over 26 hours straight. I watched three movies as I can't sleep on a plane.
